Jaicharan Iyengar, MD is a nationally-recognized specialist in orthopaedic surgery with focus on treatment of the shoulder, elbow and knee. His specific interests include sports medicine/arthroscopy, rotator cuff repair, total shoulder replacement, shoulder instability, knee ligament reconstruction, and upper extremity fracture care. He has extensive clinical experience and has performed more than 500 successful arthroscopic procedures of the shoulder, elbow and knee. He was recognized as a "Top Doctor" in Stockton, CA by the International Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons in 2016. He also has earned a "Five-Star" rating by HealthGrades.com for his excellence in clinical care.
Dr. Iyengar grew up in Southen California and graduated summa cum laude from UCLA with B.A. in History. He then attended medical school at UC San Francisco and stayed on at UCSF to complete his residency in orthopaedic surgery. After residency, he pursued additional training in shoulder, elbow and sports medicine surgery at the prestigious Charles S. Neer fellowship at Columbia University in New York. During his fellowship, Dr. Iyengar served as an assistant team physician to the New York Yankees and Columbia Lions Division I football team under his mentors Dr. Christopher Ahmad and Dr. William Levine, respectively.
Clinical & Research Interests
Dr. Iyengar has published numerous scientific articles and delivered presentations on rotator cuff repair, reverse shoulder replacement, shoulder instability and fractures/trauma of the shoulder and elbow. He has authored book chapters on minimally-invasive rotator cuff repair technique and elbow ulnar collateral ligament (“Tommy John”) surgery. He has a special interest in injury prevention and treatment of the throwing athlete. He currently serves as Head Team Physician to the University of Pacific Tigers Divsion I collegiate athletics and Team Physician to the Stockton Ports (Oakland A's Class-A Affiliate).
Dr. Iyengar is a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) and is a board-certified diplomate of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS). He holds eligibility for a Certificate of Added Qualification (CAQ) in Sports Medicine. He also serves as a scientific reviewer for the Journal of Shoulder & Elbow Surgery, the Shoulder & Elbow Section of the Journal of the AAOS and and an editor for UpToDate.Com.
Dr. Iyengar is interested in the global burden of musculoskeletal disease and has volunteered on orthopaedic medical missions in Uganda and South Africa. He is passionate about travel and has visited over 30 countries on 6 continents. He and his wife, a native of Stockton, spend most of their time chasing around their energetic young son. In his free time, Dr. Iyengar enjoys running, snowboarding, yoga and wine appreciation. Despite being a "Northern Californian" since 2003, he remains a die-hard Lakers, Dodgers and UCLA Bruins fan.
